TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Transportation Minister Budi Karya explained that the ministry is considering implementing 4 in 1 vehicle policy to counter Jakarta’s air pollution issue.
“The majority uses transportation for one person or a maximum of two persons [in one vehicle], so we consider changing it to 3 in 1 or 4 in 1 to lower the number,” said Budi Karya in the State Palace area on Monday, August 14, 2023.
In addition, Budi said the ministry will collaborate with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Acting Governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono, and the police to enforce the law concerning emission tests on vehicles. According to Budi, vehicles failing to pass the emission tests have no right to roam the streets.
The ministry also encourages the electric vehicle ecosystem in Jakarta to increase the number of people with zero-emission vehicles.
“We also ask the National Electricity Company to add the number of Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations for people with electric vehicles, to implement the existing Government Regulation,” said Budi.
Earlier today, August 14, 2023, President Jokowi met with several ministries including the Transportation Minister and governors to discuss the deteriorating air quality in Jakarta.
The president instructed government officials to employ several measures to resolve the air pollution problem, namely weather modification, regulation to limit emissions and increase the number of open green spaces.
Further, the President also instructed the ministries to transition towards mass transportation and reduce fossil-fuel vehicles. Lastly, Jokowi instructed to strengthen climate change mitigation measures.
